What is the Difference Between Acrylic and Perspex Sheet?

When looking for clear plastic sheets for signage, displays, or protective barriers, two terms often come up: acrylic and Perspex. While they’re frequently used interchangeably, it’s helpful to understand the subtle distinction.

Acrylic – The Material

Acrylic is a type of plastic polymer known scientifically as polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA). It’s lightweight, shatter-resistant, UV-stable, and offers excellent optical clarity. Acrylic sheets are available from many manufacturers under various brand names.

Perspex – A Brand Name

Perspex is a brand name of acrylic sheet, manufactured by Lucite International, part of Mitsubishi Chemical Group. It’s one of the oldest and most well-known acrylic brands, particularly in the UK and Europe. Just like “Kleenex” is a brand of tissue, Perspex is a brand of acrylic.

So What’s the Difference?

In short:

  • Acrylic is the generic name for the material.

  • Perspex is a specific brand of acrylic.

All Perspex is acrylic, but not all acrylic is Perspex.
